Today was Reese's very 1st swimming lesson! She was not too happy with the situation for the 1st five minutes but soon took to the lesson like a fish to water ;) Blake, Emerson and I had fun watching Reese and Dad splish splash in the pool!! Reese loves the Wheels on the Bus song and you could see her face light up when the instructor started singing it!!! I'm so glad we were able to find a time that worked for her lessons. It is getting a bit difficult to fit all these activities in to our calendar, but we definitely don't want Reese to miss out! Hopefully Reese will continue to enjoy her swimming lessons :)

What a great day!
We had such a fantastic Saturday, I just have to blog about it!!
It started out early (as it usually does with our early to bed, early to rise kidlets!)!!
First thing on the agenda, was registering Emerson in our community preschool - Lago Lindo preschool. We hope Emerson will get into the 100 Voices program at Bishop Savaryn (where Blake is going to K) but if she does not get funding, we won't be sending her! $250 a month is a bit too much for us to justify for a preschool program! I don't think she'll be funded, as the funding is based on an OT/PT/SLP assessment and as far as we can tell she does not have any issues in her speech, gross or fine motor skills. But you never know!! Her assessment is on April 30th and our fingers are crossed, as the 100 Voices program sounds amazing!! I have heard that they 'try' hard to fund children, as the funding they receive from the school board far exceeds the $250/month parents pay ... so we'll see! Registering her in Lago Lindo is a back-up plan, but a fine one at that. Since Blake was small, I've always heard how great it is! We didn't register Blake in it for a few reasons, one of which was the volunteer commitments and having 3 kids 3 and under at the time!! But the kids are getting older and our time is a bit more flexible, so we should be able to manage the fundraising and volunteering that is required. And speaking of preschool, we got some exciting news on Friday ... a spot has opened up in Blake's Thursday morning preschool class!! So Emerson will start attending with her big bro, beginning in April! Blake and Em are both very excited!!
When I got home from preschool registration, we were off to Blake's last initiation 1 ice time! It was a lot of fun to watch the kids play a real hockey game ... and very entertaining!! One little guy took the puck to the net he was facing every time he had it on his stick! It didn't matter if he was facing his own goalie or the other team's goalie ... he was only going forward! So funny!!! They were all very cute and had a blast :) The KC Lion's have had a great year and all the players have improved immensely! Cal was kind of thrown into the head coach role, after volunteering to be an assistant, but I am so proud of the season he had. He spent many hours planning practices and coming up with original and fun drills. The kids smiling faces every Saturday morning and vast improvements in skating, listening and puck handling are proof he and his assistant coaches did a wonderful job! Way to go hun :) :) Now Blake is looking forward to a couple of Edges camps and Initiation 2 next year!!
After hockey, the 2 older kids and myself went out for lunch with my Dad. After lunch we came back to our house and Dad and Cal assembled Em's new bike! Emerson hasn't got the pedalling motion quite yet, but she really enjoyed sitting on her bike and did do some pedalling! She's mastering the skill of steering right now, while being pushed by Grandpa and Dad ;) Blake hopped on his bike like an old pro and seems to have forgotten the trauma of the "incident" of last summer ... it helped that Grandpa bought him a horn and told him he can now honk to let people know he's coming! Blake has obviously grown A LOT since last summer, his bike looks very small!! Reese also enjoyed the great outdoors, running down the sidewalk and exploring and then being carried in Grandpa's and Dad's arms :) Hopefully we will get out on the bikes again tomorrow!
It was a great day :) I just love this spring-like weather!!!

The early ed consultant from Edmonton Catholic School's came to speak to everyone in attendance about their early ed programs, philosophy, french immersion program, etc. It was great to get more info. on both programs and meet more school staff! Apparently Blake will learn to read and write in French beginning in grade 1 and by the end of grade 3 will be reading and writing fluently in both french and english. I'm very excited to see how Blake learns and how fast he picks up the french language! I have heard that after just a few months in french immersion kindergarten, kids are already speaking quite a bit of french!! I seen the K classroom's when I registered Blake in January, but we visited them again on open house night and met the K teacher's (1 of which is a friend of mine!). I'm really looking forward to being a part of the Bishop Savaryn 'family'! We have heard wonderful reviews about the school and french immersion program and hope we've made the right choice.
And I can not forget to mention Emerson's 1st unparented swimming lesson on Friday!! She had a lot of fun and was very well-behaved. We didn't have to go onto the deck or anything, she went right with the instructor and had a great lesson! We're so proud of her :)

Trip to Connor's House!
On Saturday, March 3rd I took the morning Red Arrow bus to Fort Mac to meet Connor and congratulate his Mom and Dad ;)
I had a great time snuggling the little man and visiting with his Mom and Dad!! He is so, so cute and cuddly. Loves to be cuddled and wrapped up tight in his blankies! He is nursing like a champ and sleeping pretty good too! Before they left the hospital, they thought he might be on the verge of being jaundice so he was sent home with a Bili blanket just to be sure. Soon after I arrived on Saturday the health nurse called to let them know he can be free of the cumbersome Bili blanket! And then today after more blood work and a visit to the pediatrician they got the final word that all is fine and he is not jaundiced! Lindsay looks great and seems to be doing really, really well for just having had a c-section. She says she feels pretty good :) I told her I think mother nature gives us Mom's a sort of "high" to deal with the lack of sleep we experience at first. It's amazing how good you can feel on very little sleep when you're concentrating on your beautiful new baby :)
Sunday afternoon I caught a ride back to Edmonton with Jeremy's Dad. I was there for a little over 24 hours and got a lot of Connor snuggles in! I'm SO glad I got to meet him when he was only a few days old, as I'm sure he'll be a bit bigger the next time I see him!!
Thank you so, so, so much to my wonderful husband and parents for helping make this trip happen!! I know it was only 1 night but I've never been away from Reese overnight and only a handful of times have I been away overnight from Blake and Em! So leaving all 3 behind was strange and a bit worrisome (yes, I tend to be a slight control freak ... I admit it!!) Dad drove me to the bus Saturday morning and Mom watched the girls while Cal, Blake and Dad were at hockey later that morning. I know Cal had his hands full, as do I every day, but I knew the kids were fine and would probably enjoy all the "Dad" time!!! No one seemed to mind I was gone and in fact tonight at bedtime tonight when I layed Reese down, she started calling, "Daddy! Daddy!!" The kids are dying to meet Connor, but we will FaceTime with them again soon and they will be down here on Easter long weekend! I can't wait to get a picture of all 4 "Smith" grandchildren :)
Love you Connor, can't wait to see you at Easter!!

Connor James Stecyk
I am so excited to welcome Mr. Connor James Stecyk to our family!!!
My sister and Jeremy welcomed Connor to the world on February 28th @ 2:46 pm. He weighed 7 lbs 7 ounces and was 20.5" long! He is so adorable and looks a lot like his Dad (at least in pictures!!)!
We are all very excited to meet Connor :) Emerson and Blake love looking at his pictures and want to go to Fort McMurray as soon as possible!! In the first picture Emerson saw of Connor, he was laying on Jeremy's chest. Emerson said, "Awwww, he looks so comfy! He loves his Daddy! He's wearing his pajama's! Does he wear those pajama's to bed?" lol!
This weekend if Reese is feeling better, I am hoping to make a quick trip to Fort McMurray to meet Connor and congratulate his parents!!
Congrats again Lindsay and Jeremy, you are going to be fabulous parents :) Welcome to the amazing journey of parenthood!

Poor Reese :(
Last Thursday I took Reese to the walk in clinc because she had a very bad cough. The doctor said she had an ear infection and gave us amoxicillin.
Friday morning Reese woke up and looked really sick. She was lethargic and crabby which is unusual for her. Friday afternoon she was sick to her stomach a few times and then the diarrhea started. The puking only lasted for a couple of days but the other has lasted nearly a week now :( You can tell she feels really terrible. She did not even want to stand by herself or even walk for the first 3 days. I think she just felt really crappy and really weak. She didn't want to eat or drink and I was worried she was getting dehydrated so I took her to the Stollery E.R. on Sunday afternoon. The pediatrician there said as long as her tongue is moist, she is not dehydrated but that she was probably borderline and to ensure she drank an appropriate amount of fluid. The problem was, she didn't want to open her mouth for anything ... which led to syringing pedialite and another electrolyte drink the Stollery pediatrician gave us, into her mouth until she felt like drinking it! Thankfully the syringing didn't last long and she never did get dehydrated. He also checked her ears and 1 was red, but not too bad so he suggested we stop the antibiotics (thus far she had only had 2 doses and had puked up the rest).
Tuesday Dr. Radisic checked her, since we were there anyways for Em's 3 yr check up. He said both her ears were red and he could see a little bit of fluid in one. At that point I didn't think her ears were causing her too much trouble. She wasn't waking up screaming at night (sure sign of an ear infection!!) and wasn't pulling at them at all. Dr. Radisic says that 50% of all ear infections clear up on their own, without antibiotics. We are very sensitive to this fact and prefer to not use antibiotics if not necessary! I worry about causing antibiotic resistant bacteria from the over use of antibiotics and/or using at inappropriate times. According to Dr. Radisic, the only true way to tell if the ear infection is bacterial or viral is to use a needle to extract fluid from the ear. Which is only done for research purposes, obviously a child wouldn't tolerate that procedure very well!! So we decided to wait it out and see if she got worse ...
Which brings us Wednesday night, when she did in fact get worse :( Wednesday and Thursday evening she went to bed fine and slept for approx. 7 hours before waking up crying and screaming. Obviously my first thought is "ear infection!" So off we were to the doctor's office AGAIN today! And sure enough, both ears are red and bulbous. The doctor let me look and then showed me a picture of a normal ear. Quite a difference between the two. Now the only issue is that she has had diarrhea and been sick to her stomach and is lacking "good" gut bacteria right now. This is a problem because antibiotics kill all bacteria - good and bad. And killing the good bacteria leads to ... diarrhea. So the game plan today is, to wait another day and see how her "gut" is! Hopefully the diarrhea stops, she sleeps all night and is on the mend and we don't have to give her the antibiotics. Otherwise, we'll wait until she has not had diarrhea for 24 hrs and start the antibiotics. I've been giving her probiotics that we got from the naturopath, hoping that they will replenish that good but bacteria. And trying to feed her yogurt, but she's still not interested in much eating!!
Next year we are DEFINITELY getting the flu shot!! All of us! I've always been a supporter of the flu shot and e usually get it, but didn't this year. I wonder if Reese would have gone through this, had she had the flu shot ...
Feel better soon Reese, we hate seeing you like this and quite honestly we are very tired!!!!

Big Girl!!
Turning 3 is a big milestone in our house!
At 3 a visit to the dentist and optometrist is recommended and unparented lessons and preschool classes can begin!
Emerson had her 3 yr check up on Tuesday morning with Dr. Radisic, our pediatrician. She weighed in at 30 lbs (30th %tile) and was 36.2" tall (25th %tile). She has actually climbed the charts in %tiles!! Dr. Radisic was impressed with her speech and vocabulary!! It was very cute to see her interacting with the nurse and Dr! I was holding a very sick Reese and could not help Em much, so she took her coat and boots off and skipped off to be weighed and measured by the nurse! When she came back she stepped on to the stool and up onto the examination table with a little help from Dr. Radisic! She answered all his questions and asked for a sucker at the end!! lol!!
On Wednesday morning I registered Emerson for the next session of gymnastics (begins in April), which will be unparented. Her class time will be Saturday's from 11:30 to 12:30. And unparented swimming lessons start next Friday!
Today Em had her first visit to the dentist! She did awesome!! She did not say much, just shook her head yes or no, which is quite a change for our chatty little girl! The hygienist did a little bit of scaling and polished her teeth. The dentist did an examination and said her teeth are some of the smallest she's ever seen. And Dr. Bergt suggested we encourage Emerson to stop sucking her thumb ... which she realizes is easier said then done! There is an appliance that can be put in Em's mouth for approx. 6 months (they call it a bridge). It prevents thumb-suckers from getting their thumb in the optimal "sucking" position (thumb on the roof of the mouth)!! Dr. Bergt's daughter had this appliance when she was only 3 years old and after a few weeks she was completely weaned from sucking her thumb. This is something we will probably look into for Em, however after listening to Dr. Bergt describe what thumb sucking can do to your teeth, Emerson says she is going to stop sucking her thumb!!!! And of course we have policeman Blake on the job as well ;) He has already reminded her that she should not suck her thumb!! I'm betting that tonight once they go to bed, we will hear Blake reminding Emerson to not suck her thumb!
I will make Em and optometrist appointment, but I think I'll wait a few months!

Growing up so fast!!
A quick update on our growing kidlet's ;)
Reese:
Miss Reese is changing so quickly!! She is so much more a little girl now vs. a baby. I love this age though!!! I forgot how much fun it can be :) She's talking more and more every day and learning so fast! She absolutely LOVES Heidi right now and can't seem to get enough of her. Whenever the pantry door is open, Reese goes to Heidi's food and tries to reach inside to feed her. She reaches and says, "Heidi!! Heidi!" It is adorable!! If it is time for Heidi to eat, I will get a scoop of food ready and let Reese help me pour it into Heidi's bowl. Reese LOVES this and gives me a huge grin!!! She also loves to help me put the lid back on Heidi's food container! She lifts it up, I put it on and then ask her to help me push the lid on! She has such a proud look on her face when she gets to help!! She loves to help doing anything and everything - getting a cup out of the kid's cupboard, plates, bowls, spoons, putting her clothes in the hamper, cleaning up, getting her boots, etc.
Emerson:
I registered Emerson for preschool today! She is on a wait list though. There was space in Monday and Friday afternoons, but I'd like her to go with Blake on a Tuesday or Thursday morning. We're only going to put her in one morning a week this school year. I'm hoping it will be an easy transition for Emerson! She is A LOT more independent then Blake was at her age!! We feel that preschool will be very good for Em. Being that she's only attended a dayhome a handful of times and has spent the rest of her time with Mom and/or Dad, she isn't very comfortable in a crowd and doesn't always have the best social skills. We have definitely included her in many group activities and lessons, but it will be good for her to be more independent, without Mom and/or Dad! I'm sure she's going to love it and will learn a great deal :) She's starting to show a lot of interest in learning! She's very interested in writing her name these days and enjoys pointing out different letters of the alphabet :) I still can't believe Em is 3 ... seems like just yesterday she was a tiny little baby. There will definitely be some tears shed by this Mom on her 1st day of preschool ;)
Blake:
Blake is growing like a weed (what's new?!)!! His size 5 pants are getting too short but size 6 is too long! They need to make 1/2 sizes ;) Blake and Cal are going to the Oiler's game on Saturday afternoon! They are both very excited!! Blake can't wait to see Taylor Hall up close. Their seats are in row 2, in the end the Oiler's warm up in, so Blake will get a very close look!!! I can't wait to hear all about it! I wish I was going too!! Blake continues to love preschool! He talks often about his best friends ... Nathan, Evan and Ryder! It is really quite cute ;) He will be sad to hear that Nathan's Mom is pulling him out of preschool at the end of the month. I'm not sure if I should tell him or wait until he notices :( I am going to miss Blake so much when he goes to Kindergarten next year. I'm so glad it's only a 1/2 a day! Thank you to the school board for easing us overprotective, SAHM's into the school years ;) Grade 1, I can't even imagine ... having him gone 5 full days a week?! EEK!! I guess I shouldn't get ahead of myself!!

Miss Reese is changing so quickly!! She is so much more a little girl now vs. a baby. I love this age though!!! I forgot how much fun it can be :) She's talking more and more every day and learning so fast! She absolutely LOVES Heidi right now and can't seem to get enough of her.
